Ingredients
✓ 4 medium yellow onions
✓ 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
✓ 1 tablespoon olive oil
✓ 4 sprigs fresh thyme or rosemary
✓ Salt and pepper to taste
✓ 1/2 cup low sodium broth or water
Instructions
✓ Peel the onions and cut them in half, leaving the root end intact.
✓ In a large skillet, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat.
✓ Add onions, season with salt and pepper, and sauté for about 5 minutes until they begin to soften.
✓ Increase heat to medium-high and cook until onions are golden brown on one side, about 10-12 minutes.
✓ Flip the onions carefully and continue cooking until the other side is equally caramelized, another 10-12 minutes.
✓ Add thyme or rosemary sprigs and low sodium broth or water, cover, and simmer for an additional 15-20 minutes until onions are soft and tender.
Notes
Ensure the onions are cut whole to achieve a more even caramelization. Patience is key during cooking to ensure they become soft and tender.
